Rave Strategies is a tool for generating creative prompts to assist in the production of electronic music. It is intended as a more grounded alternative to Oblique Strategies – outlining specific direction & constraints.

Written in Python and executed from the command line, it delivers prompts via email each time it's run. This makes it simple to schedule the generation of new strategies on a regular basis – be that monthly, weekly, or daily – according to the user's needs.

Each prompt contains the following direction for production:

• Tempo (in BPM)
• Genre
• Key
• Sound Sources
• Sequencer
• Song Length
• Song Description

The first six aspects are intentionally prescriptive, while the last one is abstract and open to interpretation.

The dice-rolling approach leads to interesting places, decoupling genres and the tempos typically associated with them – for instance, e.g. “200bpm ambient”.

At the moment this is a very bespoke tool, specifically tailored to the gear in my studio and the sonic territories that I'm most interested in. Fork a version and customize it to your own needs.
