Chiptune Resistance, 20 Years Later

Earlier this month I had the opportunity to go play a few shows in Sweden alongside my longtime friend and brother-in-arms, Bit Shifter. We were invited over by Ess (of Fors) to come play at Lo-bit Club in Gothenburg in commemoration of the 20th anniversary of our International Chiptune Resistance World Tour. Additional gigs in Malmo and Stockholm got added on after we began discussing plans, and I wanted to share a bit about the experience while its still fresh in my mind.

First some quick background, the ICR 2006 Tour was a 20 date tour across 9 countries that Josh and I somehow cobbled together after being invited to play a handful of shows in Europe and having a few too many Belgian beers at Vol de Nuit in the East Village. There is no way we would have been able to pull it off without the help of so many great friends and musicians around the world coming together to help us book the venues, provide us with couches to crash on, and lend their local support. It was completely DIY, partially crowdfunded, totally unhinged, and absolutely one of the best times of my life.

Performing live on Game Boy at Panora in Malmö, Sweden. May 9, 2006.

Twenty years later, and here I am – again having some of the best times of my life. This time I got to bring my amazing wife and daughter along for the trip, and I'm still getting to do this thing that I absolutely love – sharing music and sounds among friends in a wild feedback loop of inspiration that never gets old. I don't want to spend this time going into detail with show-by-show recaps, what I really want to do is convey the vibe of the experience through some fleeting moments along the way. So what follows is a stream-of-consciousness upload straight from the dome – I hope it takes you there.

Watching my daughter put on her first pair of headphones, settle into her first flight on an airplane, on her first international trip, while clutching a tiny mouse plushie in one hand and a lollipop in the other.

Spending my birthday walking around Copenhagen with my wife and daughter before the tour officially kicked off. Breakfast at the city's oldest bakery and lunch at its oldest restaurant. Toddler footsteps on cobblestone streets.

Meeting up with Josh outside the hotel in Malmo and sharing a familiar ahhhh shit here we go again moment before walking over to Old Nobes Bodega to meet up with Ess and Keff for some beers.

Nordloef performing live on Game Boy at Retreat Radio in Malmö, Sweden. October 9, 2026.

Feeling the energy (and humidity) inside the room instantly multiply as soon as Nordloef, Salkinitzor, and Boomlinde kicked off their set at Retreat Radio. A tiny room, with not much more than a fog machine, a laser, and a PA, crammed with people absolutely buzzing for this music. The same Malmo I remember from 20 years ago.

Chatting with people after the show in Malmo, hearing from more than one that had been at our show there 20 years ago. Particularly memorable chat wih Spiky in the Fors studio sharing her vivid impressions of my set – she picked up on the unease and anxiety lurking beneath the rave sheen more than most.

Showing Zabutom this geeked out 20+ year old photo of the two of us, then recreating it outside the venue in Gothenburg. Ess saying, "no no! you guys look too confident now, it needs to be more awkward!" while lining up the shot.

Talking to Carpet Eater about his Amiga 500 and its many mods, hearing echoes of that familiar I don't know why I chose to do things the hard way, but I'm having a blast doing it from a new generation. Then hearing the result of that sentiment in the pummeling gabber kicks during his set.

Watching Josh perform the slow version of "Reformat the Planet" from backstage – no words. Just one of those real full circle moments.

Stumbling upon Zabu working on a new LSDJ tune in a pitch black equipment room, Vivaldi-esque baroque pulse channel lines swirling wildly. Getting into a conversation about parenthood and life, before Josh joining us and delving into music and why we do what we do – all still in a pitch dark room.

Chatting with Goto80 about Razor1911, making music for cracktros as perhaps the pinnacle of musical accomplishment in our scene. I was half-dead by this point in the night and wishing I had more energy as its always engaging to chat with Anders.

Strolling around Sodermalm in the rain with Random, Bit Shifter, and my daughter. The surreal experience of seeing her hanging out and having conversations with these guys that've been my friends for so many years. Past, present, and future colliding.

Catching up with Covox about life, saunas, guns, radio telescopes, and good accent colors. Obsessing over how dialed-in Phille's industrial & ebm playlist was after the show at Momangen. When "Assimilate" came on I started talking about this one specific performance of it on youtube that I've watched a million times, Thomas immediately pulled out his phone and said "this one?" – entangled neurons for real.

Getting to see Johan again after so many years, and getting to (tearfully) thank him from the stage in Stockholm. No idea what my life would look like today if I hadn't discovered LSDJ and gone down this path.

Walking back to Gamla Stan through rainy streets and stopping to get a late night kebab with Ess. Wrapping up the meal by photographing a trash rat.

Meeting Random's daughter, and then getting to see her and my own daughter become fast friends – drawing together, playing, running around and just having so much fun together. Communicating with each other beyond language.

And of course, I loved getting to let loose with all the rave stabs, breakbeats, and chiptune arps for everyone who came out to dance. Hope we don't have to wait another 20 years to do something like this again. Thank you.
